On January 4, 2025, I joined the Illinois Hemp Growers Association (IHGA) and a dedicated
group of hemp advocates at the Illinois State Capitol. As we rallied against HB 4293 and
promoted the grassroots-driven HB 5903, I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment-not
just for the work we were doing, but for being part of a community that is deeply committed
to protecting and growing the hemp industry in Illinois.
Standing Up for What Matters
HB 4293 poses a significant threat to the hemp industry, and opposing it wasn't just a
political stance-it was personal. This bill, rushed into the lame duck session without
changes or collaboration, would devastate small farms, processors, and businesses across
Illinois. It's a direct attack on everything we've worked so hard to build.
We didn't just show up to say "no." We also championed a better path forward: HB 5903,
introduced by Representative Sonya M. Harper. This bill reflects the values of the hemp
community-fairness, safety, and opportunity for all. Supporting it felt like standing up for
the heart of what the IHGA represents.
The Power of Community
What struck me most throughout the day was the overwhelming support and camaraderie of
the IHGA community. From the Capitol Rotunda to legislators' offices, I was surrounded by
growers, processors, advocates, and business owners, all working together toward a shared
goal.
It's not easy to take time out of our lives to fight for something we believe in, especially so
soon after the holidays. However, the energy and dedication of everyone present made it clear: this
is what grassroots advocacy looks like.
A special thanks to Rachel and Chris Berry, whose leadership and example helped make this
lobbying day so effective. Watching them in action was inspiring, and it reinforced my belief
in the power of community-led movements.
A Personal Accomplishment
Walking into the Capitol, I felt the weight of the challenges ahead & the bite of a cold Midwest winter day, but I left feeling proud. Proud of the conversations we had with legislators, proud of the rally we held, and proud to
be part of a movement that refuses to back down.
This experience reminded me why I'm so passionate about grassroots movements. It's not
just about the policies we fight for, it's about the people we fight alongside. The IHGA
community has shown me what it means to stand together and create meaningful change,
and I'm grateful to be part of it.
Looking Ahead
The fight against HB 4293 isn't over, but I'm confident that the momentum we've built will
carry us forward. Together, we'll keep advocating for HB 5903, a bill that represents the
best interests of the hemp industry and the communities it supports.
If you haven't yet joined this movement, I encourage you to get involved. Whether it's through
attending future lobbying days, calling your representatives, or supporting IHGA through a
donation or Patreon membership, every action makes a difference.
Thank you to everyone who stood with us on January 4th. Let's keep the spirit of grassroots
advocacy alive as we work toward a brighter future for hemp in Illinois.
